Why Tasmania in winter is simply divine

Tasmania in winter is simply divine, as our co-founder Mario found out on his recent visit.

Tassie in winter is less crowded, hectic and unbelievably relaxing. Think fireplaces, mulled wine and leisurely walks.

My recent trip away to Hobart and Freycinet proved to be the perfect quick winter getaway to switch off from the world, sleep in, chill out, but still be able to explore the stunning nature Tassie is famous for.

There is no better place to do this then at Saffire resort, stunning architecture, landscape and views of the Hazards and other mountains that simply will take your breath away.

As a five-star, all-inclusive resort, it will leave you wanting to stay forever for the food, staff and beauty and the oh so romantic atmosphere when you’re cuddling up in the cold with the better half.

I now know why we got so many same-sex wedding enquiries for this divine venue when it finally became legal in Australia in 2017!

The simple drive from Hobart to the Freycinet peninsula has many options for a great lunch with the standout being Devils Corner Vineyard – a must for amazing fish and chips, super-fresh oysters, wood-fire pizza and, of course, the wines.

To mix it up after a two-night stay at Saffire, we moved to Macq01 in the renovated wharfs at Constitution Bay (below), with beautiful rooms, delicious breakfasts and friendly attentive staff.

It’s best to get a room with a waterfront view and balcony. Great for watching the brilliant sunset behind Mount Wellington as it colours the skyline and bay.

From a visit to Salamanca markets, a drive to the top of Mount Wellington for the views and revitalising fresh air to all the cute new bars and restaurants in hip North Hobart, there is so much to see and do, but all at a country-town-like relaxed pace.

Make sure you leave a day aside for a visit to the amazing Mona (below), a refreshing Museum experience. Catching the ferry over and back is a treat on its own, and grab lunch there at the Faro bar and restaurant for a unique experience.

The only gay bar in the village on a Saturday night didn't quite get busy till around 11.30pm when a nearby awards night at a hall finished up and guests made their way over for lots of drinks and lots of dancing. All in good fun!

Be warned: it does get very cold in Tasmania in winter, but it is so worth a visit as the perfect escape from the everyday madness.
